Assistant at McArthur Golf Club wins event

Hobe Sound, FL -- Mike Gray birdied his first two holes, Patrick Hawkins his last two, as they won separate competitions conducted Tuesday by the Southeast Chapter of the South Florida PGA Section at the Breakers Rees Jones Course in West Palm Beach.

Gray, head pro at North Palm Beach Country Club for the past three years, fired a 1-under-par 71 to capture the 14th annual Global Golf Sales/Head Professionals Championship.

Hawkins, an assistant at McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, won a separate 18-hole event for assistants pros with a 5-under 67. The former local mini-tour player from Dallas finished with birdies at the third and fourth holes. Earlier he had bogeyed No. 6, his second hole of the day, and he added four birdies on the back nine.

In the Head Professionals Championship, Chris Campbell of Vista Plantation Golf Club in Vero Beach finished fifth with a 73. Steve Harrop of Hammock Creek in Palm City, Kevin Murphy, of McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound and Sean Quinlivan of the Fox Club in Palm City each posted a 74.

In the Assistants Tournament, Frank Dobbs of Eagle Marsh in Jensen Beach placed seventh with a 72 and Scott Turner of Hammock Creek finished at 73.
