VERO BEACH, FL — Police on Monday morning were investigating a possible murder-suicide at a nursing home that left a husband and wife dead.

Police were called shortly before 9 a.m. to the Royal Palm Convalescent Center in the 2100 block of 10th Avenue, Vero Beach. The couple was found in the courtyard, Indian River County Fire Marshal Brian Nolan said.

The victims were identified as 84 year old Mary P. Lett, and her husband 91 year old Frederick R. Lett.

Mary was a full-time resident for the past two months and required around-the-clock care.

Frederick visited her every day from their home on Bethel Creek Drive in Vero Beach.

Police say there was no argument or violence leading up to the incident.

They appeared to be a close couple, police said.

Police will not say if this was a planned murder-suicide. But it appears Frederick came to visit his wife, shot his wife then shot himself.

Investigators say the campus is open and no one is routinely searched for weapons.

Police say no one else was put in danger.
