VERO BEACH, FL — A 68-year-old woman told police she lost $2,400 cash when she was fooled by a phone caller posing as her grandson Monday.
The woman said she received a call at 10 a.m. Monday from the suspect, who told her he was his grandson and was in need of a large amount of cash to pay off his bookie, the incident report said.
The caller initially said he owed $6,000 but was able to convince the woman to get $2,400 cash for him to borrow, the report said.
The caller asked the woman to meet him at Maryland Fried Chicken in the 1700 block of Tenth Avenue at 11 a.m. Monday, police said. He instructed her to leave the cash under the driver’s seat of her car with the windows down, the report said.
The woman followed the instructions and sat inside the restaurant for 90 minutes before leaving and discovering the money had been taken, police said. She called her grandson on a different number and discovered that he had not been the one to call her that morning, the report said.
The woman provided police a 407 area code phone number as the one that appeared when the suspect called her.
Anyone with information about this crime should call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at (800) 273-TIPS (8477).
