VERO BEACH, FL -- The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is now bustling with chihuahuas - 75 to be exact.
A local breeder surrendered the dogs claiming "financial hardship." The dogs were surrendered on the condition that the breeder's name not be released.
"This illustrates the problem of pet overpopulation," said Janet Winikoff, director of education at the Humane Society. "There are hundreds of breeders in this community thinking it will be a lucrative business." But in a struggling economy, she adds, some are not able to continue their operations.
"You're talking about animals lives," said Winikoff. "We're happy she [the breeder] made a responsible choice."
The 75 chihuahuas and 1 pug that showed up at the Humane Society effectively doubled the shelter's population - now up to 145 dogs and 357 animals overall.
Officials at the facility estimate a $30,000 cost to care and shelter the new animals.
In addition to families to adopt the dogs, the humane society is asking for donations to help cover the costs of caring for so many animals at once.
