VERO BEACH, FL - A vaccination clinic must be pretty scary for a little kid.
A wait of more than hour in some cases, health workers in running around in funny florescent vests and at the end of the line, a maniacal nurse wielding an incredibly sharp needle.
Judging by the screams coming from rooms at the Indian River County Health Department, the swine flu vaccination clinic is not a fun place to be for a kid.
But the shots could save these youngsters' lives.
Indian River County held their first swine flu vaccination clinic Tuesday night. Despite all the tears shed, workers say it got off to a pretty painless start.
A little more than an hour into the clinic, workers had already given more than 250 shots.
Workers expected to have some doses left over. Those will be added to tomorrow night's supply.
Indian River County hopes to immunize 1,500 children this week.
Clinics are scheduled at the Health Department both Wednesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Indian River County kids from six months old to 12th grade can get the vaccine for free.
The Health Department is located 1900 27th Street in Vero Beach.
Another clinic is scheduled for next Saturday at the Indian River County Fairgrounds.
People in the five priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control will be able to get the vaccine between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The five priority groups are pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of children less than six months, those six months old to 24 years, those 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions and health care and emergency services personnel.
