GIFFORD, FL-- He's not perfect and Kenneth Smith has the criminal history to prove it.

But his mother Mary Brown is certain of one thing, "I cannot see him fighting dogs.  I can't see it."

The Indian River County Sheriff's Office says otherwise.

Deputies arrested Smith, along with Jamiey Parker, Christopher Jones and Ervin Everett Saturday night.

Someone near 44th road in Gifford called the sheriff's office.

The caller claimed the men were fighting dogs behind these homes.

"One of our deputies observed several men sitting in a circle with several pit bills within the circle actively fighting, said Sheriff Deryl Loar.

Neighbors didn't want to talk about the arrests. As one woman put it, she has to live here so she didn't see anything.

Mary Brown got a call from jail.

Her son had his own version of events.

"They were sitting in an area, playing dominoes and the dog broke loose and he was going out in the street trying to get another dog and they all got up and try to stop the fight between the two dogs," Brown said.

The dogs are now in protective custody and detectives won't release any pictures while their investigation continues.

Sheriff Loar says of the five pit bulls seized, two are in such bad shape; they may have to be put down.

All four men face felony charges of fighting or baiting animals.
