SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- A Suburban West Palm Beach company might soon see a lot of traffic now that the federal government has awarded a new energy rebate grant to the state of Florida.

Foreign Affairs Auto on North Military Trail is the state's exclusive dealer for federally approved kits that will convert second generation Toyota Prius Hybrid vehicles into plug-in electric vehicles.

It typically takes over $10,000 to convert Prius vehicles into plug-in electric vehicles.

But now, Prius owners can get a $5,000 rebate from the state to help cover the cost.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the U.S. Department of Energy approved Florida's plan to use federal stimulus money for the rebates.

Florida is the first state to offer the rebates.

Foreign Affairs Auto is one of only 12 certified installation centers in the U.S. to offer the conversion module.

The conversion involves adding a lithium-ion battery to the car and 120-volt plug.

Officials say only 100 cars will be able to take advantage of the rebate because only a small amount of money has been set aside for the program.
