WEST PALM BEACH, FL -After hurricane Katrina, there were many abandoned animals like Molly the pony.
Molly handled the storm ok, but did not fair as well against a pit bull.
Kaye T. Harris, Molly's owner says, "She was actually mauled all over…I got all of her wounds to heal except for that one leg. That one leg was crushed so badly that there was no circulation from day one."
Molly was left lame but Harris would not even consider the obvious. She fought to have the leg amputated and fit with a prosthetic. It's practically unheard of.
Despite all the risks and the low percentage of success, Molly has recovered.
After her traumatic experience, Molly has gone on to bring hope and inspiration to those in difficult situations.
There is even a book written about her.
Harris says, "It's about continuing to be useful when people think you're not useful anymore…it's about continuing to survive and thrive despite disabilities and tough times and whatever."
Which is why she and the Harris family were honored Friday with the Spot Courage Award.
"When I accepted it I could only accept it on behalf of Molly herself who’s really the courageous one and the team of people who have taken care of Molly," Harris says
Hopefully it hasn’t gone to Molly's head.
"She’s a bit of a diva…she likes all the attention and wants to be pet." Harris adds.
