WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Dismayed by the fact that Makayla Sitton's killer is still on the loose, a group of civic minded locals has stepped up to take action.
Two local companies donated 15,000 flyers, as volunteers from across South Florida, donated their morning to help ensure Paul Merhige's capture.
"I think it was just an awful tragedy, and I wish they would hurry up and catch this guy," said volunteer, Rena James.
When the volunteers ran out, the organizers stepped up to the plate, and distributed flyers to local businesses and shoppers. Even the ones not yet out of their car. "The biggest thing is name recognition, and face recognition for the average citizen," said Bill Kanodle, a friend of the Sitton family, and one of the organizers of the event.
Even the average citizen knows, that when hunting for a killer, there's no bigger name, than John Walsh. America's Most Wanted showcased the story in their January 2nd broadcast, all just to make viewers aware, that Merhige is still on the loose.
And with more people aware of and actively looking for him... "Typically, what usually happens is an alert citizen, that's really paying attention that will spot someone and notify law enforcement. That's how a lot of these guys, these killers are caught," said Kanodle.
