WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- A new report is raising questions about whether Toyota has a serious safety issue that it is not admitting to with several of its Toyota and Lexus models.
It has to do with sudden acceleration in Toyota products, an issue more than a thousand owners claim they've experienced since 2001, and crashes from sudden acceleration which have led to at least 19 deaths.
A few weeks ago, Toyota announced it was recalling 3.8 million cars and trucks, telling people with the effected models to remove their floor mats, because they might get stuck under the accelerator.
The recall affects the following Toyota models: the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2004-2009 Prius, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2005-2010 Tacoma and the 2007-2010 Tundra, as well as the 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350 and the 2006-2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350.
Bt now, the
L.A. Times has published an article that criticizes the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
They found the agency has known for years about the complaints and that many of them have nothing to do with floor mats.
In fact, critics say as many as 80% of sudden acceleration complaints made to the agency were dismissed without a full investigation.
That suggests, they say, there could be another dangerous acceleration issue outside of the floor mats recall which has yet to be addressed.
