WEST PALM BEACH, FL-- After managing the last several years in the minor leagues in other cities, the lure of being near his family and coaching baseball in his backyard made it easy for Gary Carter to say yes to being named the newest head baseball coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

"I guess it really happened when my daughter gave birth to my first granddaughter, August 14th and I was not here for it.  And I realized right then and there that I need to be home for these precious moments," Carter said.

Wearing his customary number eight jersey, the Hall of Famer, nicknamed 'The Kid,' will now teach kids how to be better ball players and build the Sailfish program.

"This is the same thing about the college level, is to teach them the game, teach them also how to win, which is what we're gonna try and establish here right from day one," Carter said.
And while PBAU is where Carter will be for the foreseeable future, he did say that if the majors called one day for him to either manage or coach, he obviously would consider it.

"If maybe that opportunity one day comes about then we'll look at it but right now my emphasis is placed on this university," Carter said.

And the university couldn't be more thrilled to have him.
