THE ACREAGE, FL-- A big turnout is expected Thursday night as residents of The Acreage gather to discuss legal options.

Although there is no scientific evidence, many believe there is a cancer cluster in the community and they want to know what or who is to blame.

Attorney Kara Skorupa says folks in The Acreage had better brace themselves for a battle if they expect to file claims that a cancer cluster is being spawned by industry.

"There is a lot at stake. A lot of the potential polluters employ a lot of people in the county. They will make the case last as long as possible. They'll bring in a team of experts to negate everything you say."

Skorupa is involved in a similar case near Orlando.

She says pollutants from a power company contaminated water giving more than 20 people cancer and killing two of them.

As far as proving the source of contamination and then getting a settlement, Skorupa says victories are rare.

"It's not about the money; it's about making sure it doesn't happen again. They usually make Hollywood movies about this kind of thing, 'Erin Brockovich.' It's that hard to win but it's so important to pursue it...not to have clean water is shocking."
