LAKE WORTH, FL -- Its a tradition that started 25 years ago.
"When we started there was a lot of homeless people on the street, so the tradition continues, now people are expecting us to open," said Pete Roubekas, owner of Farmer Girl.
Every Thanksgiving Farmer Girl restaurant in Lake Worth opens its doors to those in need, like Steven Coelho and his children.
"I've been raising them since they were all infants. Their mother is out of the picture so it’s been a struggle ever since, but we just try to stay together and make the best of the holidays, " Steven Coelho.
Today, the restaurant fed more than 1,000 people.
A small army of volunteers cooked up more than 50 turkeys and hams, served mashed potatoes, corn, and lots of pies.
Hundreds of meals-to-go were also delivered to homebound residents in the Lake Worth area.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies picked up the meals and took care of the deliveries.
"I wish everybody in America would do the same thing, this is really a nice way to show their appreciation to the community," said Danny Gladstone, who came to dine with his family.
In the end, every one gave thanks to a group of people who gave their time and their hearts to make this all possible.
"Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, it's good to have you as neighbors, " said Steven Coelho.
Staff here at Farmer Girl say today was a huge success, they were able to feed everyone that walked through the door, they hope they can continue doing it for 25 more years.
