WELLINGTON,
FL -- U.S. Senator Bill Nelson vows to mobilize federal resources to get to the bottom of several cancer cases in The Acreage.
Resident after resident from the acreage stood up inside a conference room at
Wellington Regional Medial Center relaying very personal, often painful stories - some dating back years.
In attendance were adults, children, and dozens of people in a relatively small area, all touched by cancer.
Senator Bill Nelson says he's already been in contact with the White House, The Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency, promising he would do his best to mobilize federal resources to answer an overriding question.
"Is there a causal agent? And if so, how was it activated," asked Nelson. "And if so, what is the particular causal agent when it did occur and how do we go about remedy of that...."
Audra Leech, who has not experienced cancer herself, but lives in the Acreage with two small children, listened as well.
"I mean how can so many people all within a block away have all the same cancer? It's scary," she said.
Most people seemed genuinely appreciative that this case is now getting attention at such a high level.
Jennifer White, 26 - who was first diagnosed with cancer seven years ago, said aside from a cure - she wants answers.
"More research. More investigation. Answers," says White. "Relief, for myself and others that are still suffering with the tumors."
Residents promised to provide Senator Nelson's office with whatever materials and other information it asks for to get to the bottom of this mystery.
