Two cholesterol drugs still taken by millions of americans are the subject of concern for a second time.A new study involving about 360 people, showed zetia failed to shrink buildups in artery walls while a rival drug, niaspan, did so significantly.Doctor Barry Horowitz of West Palm Beach was part of studies bringing both medications to market. He said patients on Zetia shouldn't panic.Dr. Barry Horowitz - Metabolic Research Institute: "The sponsor of the study was aboot pharmaceutical which makes niacin. 2nd, it was a small study." "What I think the study shows is a clear benefit for adding Niaspin to a statin treatment for patients who are at a high risk."Last year, a large study suggested that the combo pill "Vytorin", which combines Zetia with a statin, was no more effective than Zocor alone. That's a statin now available as a cheap generic.
