Tonight, as WPTV and the Palm Healthcare Foundation continue to recognize nurses of distinction, Roxanne Stein introduces us to a nurse who is everything you want a nurse to be in an emergency situation.
Meeting patients in the emergency room at Palms West Hospital is just part Jose Cuberge's day.
"What's going to happen now, we'll take you back to ER and you'll be seen by the ER docs."
As a Certified Nursing Assistant, the nurses in the ER depend on Jose's help.
"We help RN's with vital signs, bathing ambulation."
Jose's goal to become a nurse more than 25 years ago centered on his desire to help people.
"I love it, I was inspired, I lost 2 brothers very early I made a promise I would help people."
He has done that thru words..
"People coming in are frightened they are scared they don't know what to expect when they come to the ER."
And actions-jumping in to action when a life is on the line.
"I just jump in started doing CPR it's a great feeling when someone is coming back and is alive and the patient goes home."
"Hi miss Mary, any one else waiting? No."
Volunteer Mary Salopec nominated Jose for the Certified Nursing Assistant of the year award that he received last year.
We have people come in for all situations..and Jose is wonderful..He’s so patient and he works long hours.."
That’s just fine with Jose..
I’m like 5 people at once..you have to prioritize."
"It just feels really good to help someone.."
Jose adds that his instincts about caring for people not only come from losing family members, but from his mother who is also in the healthcare profession.
