NORTHERN BROWARD COUNTY, FL --A roundup of livestock continued Tuesday morning hours after a fatal accident along US-27 just south of the Palm Beach County line.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol a semi driven by Benigno Gomez of Crystal River was southbound when the driver lost control. That caused his trailer filled with goats, pigs, sheep, chickens and cows to jackknife across the road.
A tractor with tandem trailers driver by John Edward James of Deltona was also southbound. Troopers say he struck the livestock-filled semi and also jackknifed.
James died at the scene. Gomez was not injured.
The impact also killed several livestock. Some were also injured and had to be euthanized.
Others escaped and began running loose on the road. Some ran into the nearby marshy areas.
Troopers are worried that the animals that escaped into the Everglades will come out and later become road hazards for motorists.
US-27 at mile marker 47 was closed in both directions for about 6 hours. However, traffic is once again moving in both directions.
Investigators say charges are pending.
