Steve Wasserman is the Vice President and General Manager of WPTV NewsChannel 5, the West Palm Beach NBC affiliate owned and operated by The E.W. Scripps Company.
Wasserman assumed that position in May, 2008. He oversees a station that has been ranked number one in that fast-growing market every year for more than five decades.
In 2011, Wasserman and his management team began providing news, marketing and technical services to WFLX Channel 29, the Fox affiliate in West Palm Beach which is owned by Raycom Media. WFLX is now housed in WPTV's downtown West Palm Beach facility.
In 2012, Wasserman assumed additional responsibilities as Divisional General Manager for the television division of the E. W. Scripps Company. In that capacity, Scripps stations in Denver (KMGH), Tampa-St. Petersburg (WFTS) and Cincinnati (WCPO) report to Wasserman.
Prior to coming to WPTV, Wasserman spent more than two years as the Vice President and General Manager of WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit. Previously he was the Vice President and General Manager of KPRC, the NBC affiliate in Houston for more than 11 years. While there, the station won a Peabody Award for outstanding journalism.
He also served as Vice President and General Manager of WJXT, then the CBS affiliate in Jacksonville, Fla. from 1988 to 1994. During that time, the station won a duPont-Columbia Award for journalism.
Wasserman's other career highlights include News Director of WCBS in New York, Vice President/Station Manager and News Director of WPLG, the ABC affiliate in Miami/Fort Lauderdale and News Director of WJXT in Jacksonville.
Wasserman serves on several not-for-profit boards including the University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the United Way of Palm Beach County and the American Red Cross of Palm Beach County.
Wasserman has a degree in Mass Communications from the University of Miami.
