Belle Glade - It's day training at The Arc of the Glades. The organization helps adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. The goal at The Arc is to help adults like Candace Andruske become independent.
"I like to cook. The staff helps us out," says Andruske.
The adults learn how to care for themselves and at the same time learn how to work.
Executive Director Scott Kannel said, "We try to meet the needs of people wherever they are, when they come into the program wherever they need pre-employment and employment training, we will do that. If they need basic life skills training we will do that."
In addition to learning skills in the kitchen, they are learning skills outdoors. learning how to mow the lawn and take care of the property. Once they master a skill, The Arc helps them find a job through other agencies. Scott said, "We have 13 that are supported through employment, we have roughly the same number, maybe one of two more in supportive living, living independently with our support and help," said Kannel
It's helping people like Candance live a more fulfilling life.
Candace said, "Why do I like coming here? It's just a nice place to come, I am comfortable coming here."
